The best of Britain’s traditions!

Afternoon Tea is a British tradition that originated, it is believed, in the 1840s. As the name suggests, it is typically eaten in the afternoon, between 3pm and 6pm.

The nature of afternoon tea has varied greatly in the 180 years it has graced Britain, but nowadays it is normally regarded as an indulgent treat, taken on special occasions. It is most commonly served in luxury hotels, and can sometimes be accompanied by a glass of Champagne or Prosecco.

Afternoon Tea is made up of several different components. Firstly of course, the tea! Traditional teas include English Breakfast tea, amongst other black teas, and Earl Grey tea. Other options are normally offered, including herbal, green and white teas, and fruit infusions. As previously mentioned, the more indulgent afternoon teas can be taken up a notch with a glass of Champagne or Prosecco, or a light cocktail.

Afternoon Tea wouldn’t be complete without all the delicious finger food, including freshly baked scones, with jam and clotted cream. These are usually accompanied by mini cakes, petit fours or delicate patisserie, to fulfil a sweet tooth. On the savoury end, finger sandwiches (given their name due to being cut into little batons – like a finger!) are provided, and can range from traditional to more unorthodox fillings. Traditional fillings include cucumber, egg mayonnaise and cress, smoked salmon and cream cheese, and ham and mustard.

This British tradition is truly a lovely treat and a surprisingly filling one too! Our favourites are at the Dorchester Hotel and the Berkeley Hotel. The Dorchester, amongst traditional and Champagne versions, offer an Ice Cream option and a Chocolate Indulgence option, which sound delicious! The Berkeley Hotel offers a highly non-traditional Afternoon Tea, named the Fashionista Tea, which is sure to enchant all their guests!
